Tool options

Every option in the tool options bar: which tools show it, its values and its default.

The tool options bar above the canvas shows the active tool's options. Change one and it stays that way as you switch tools and back; options that several tools share, like the brush size, are the same for all of them. Options last until you reload the page, unless you save them in a workspace layout (View > Workspace > Save Layout As..., with "Tool defaults" checked).

Where the bar is narrow its options wrap onto more rows, or on a phone scroll sideways. What each tool does with them is in the Tools reference.

With every tool

These sit at the right-hand end of the bar whatever tool is active (Paint across cels only with the painting tools). Each is an on/off button; the small arrow next to it opens its settings.

OptionValuesDefaultWhat it does
Paint across celsOn or offOffPaints every cel selected in the timeline at once (the cel you paint on must be one of them): one stroke, fill or shape lands on each, and one undo takes it back. The badge counts the cels it reaches; locked and hidden layers are skipped. With the painting tools.
SymmetryHorizontal, vertical and the two diagonals, in any combinationNoneMirrors what you draw across the chosen axes. The arrow next to it picks the axes and recenters them; drag an axis on the canvas to move it. Each sprite keeps its own.
GridOn or off; Snap to grid, Isometric, Grid settingsOffShows the sprite's grid. The arrow next to it turns on snapping, switches to an isometric grid and opens the grid settings.
Tiled viewOff, both axes, horizontal, verticalOffRepeats the sprite around itself to check that it tiles; each click steps to the next mode.
Onion skinningOn or off, with its settingsOffShows the frames before (red) and after (blue) the current one, faded. The arrow next to it holds the onion skin settings.

While a tilemap layer is active, the bar starts with its mode and the tile grid. See Tilemaps.

OptionValuesDefaultWhat it does
TilemapTiles, Pixels: Auto, Pixels: EditPixels: AutoHow tools treat the tilemap layer: Tiles places whole tiles, Pixels: Auto gives each painted cell its own tile, Pixels: Edit changes the tile everywhere it's used. While a tilemap layer is active.
Tile gridOn or offOnShows the tile boundaries over the canvas. While a tilemap layer is active.

Size4 to 256 px16 pxThe font size in pixels. Each glyph is drawn without anti-aliasing; pixel fonts look right at their design size or a multiple of it. With a loaded TTF, OTF or WOFF font.
BoldOn or offOffHeavier letters: a loaded font's bold, or, for a bitmap font, every pixel doubled to its right.
ItalicOn or offOffSlanted letters: a loaded font's italic, or, for a bitmap font, rows shifted right a pixel at a time going up.
Letter spacing-16 to 64 px0 pxExtra pixels between characters; negative pulls them closer.
Line spacing-32 to 128 px0 pxExtra pixels between lines; negative pulls them closer.
AlignLeft, Center, RightLeftLines line up on their left edges, centers or right edges; the point you clicked is that edge or center.

SizePencil Eraser Spray Scatter Dither Blur Jumble Dodge/Burn1 px to 64 px1 pxBrush size in pixels; the Spray's splash is twice as wide. A custom brush keeps its own size.
Brush shapePencil Eraser Scatter Dither Blur Jumble Dodge/BurnSquare, Circle, Line, Diamond, Cross, X, Star, CustomCircleThe brush's footprint: a square, a circle, a 1-pixel line, a diamond, a cross, an X, a star, or the custom brush picked in the Brush Library.
Custom brushesPencil Eraser Scatter Dither Blur Jumble Dodge/BurnThe built-in brushes and yoursNoneOpens the Brush Library to pick a built-in brush or draw and save your own to paint with.
AnglePencil Eraser Scatter Dither Blur Jumble Dodge/Burn0° to 180°0°Turns the brush around its center. With the Line or Square brush.
Pixel-perfectPencil Eraser DitherOn or offOffRemoves the doubled corner pixels that make a freehand line look jagged.
Right-clickEraserPaint BG, Replace FGPaint BGWhat the right button does: paint the background color, or turn only pixels of the foreground color into the background color.
InkPencil Spray Scatter Dither Paint Bucket Gradient Rectangle Ellipse Triangle Hexagon Star Iso Shape Contour Polygon Line CurveCopy, Simple, Lock Alpha, ShadingCopyHow color is applied: Copy replaces pixels (transparency too), Simple blends over them, Lock Alpha recolors only visible pixels, Shading steps pixels along the Shades.
ShadesPencil Spray Scatter Dither Paint Bucket Gradient Rectangle Ellipse Triangle Hexagon Star Iso Shape Contour Polygon Line CurveA list of colorsEmptyThe ramp the Shading ink steps along: drag palette colors in, drag to reorder, click one to remove it; + FG adds the foreground color. With the Shading ink.
DynamicsPencil Eraser DitherStabilizer; pressure and speed mapped to size, angle and gradientPressure to size (pen only)Smooths the stroke (Stabilizer) and lets pen pressure or speed vary the size, the angle, or the color from foreground to background. Pressure only comes from a pen: mouse and finger strokes ignore it.
FillRectangle Ellipse Triangle Hexagon Star Polygon CurveOutline, FilledOutlineDraws the shape's outline, or fills it. A curve only fills when it's closed.
RadiusRectangle Rectangular Selection0 to 1024 px per corner0 px (square)Rounds the corners; 0 keeps them square. With the link on, one value sets all four; turn it off to give each corner (top-left, top-right, bottom-right, bottom-left) its own. The Rectangle and the Rectangular Marquee keep separate radii.
WidthLine Curve1 px to 64 px1 pxThe stroke's thickness; wider than 1 px it gets round ends. Shared by the Line and the Curve.
Pixel perfectCurveOn or offOnRemoves the L-shaped corners a 1 px curve picks up, for clean pixel-art lines. At width 1.
ShapeIso ShapeBox, Ramp, Stairs, Pyramid, Prism (roof), Cylinder, Cone, Sphere, DomeBoxThe solid to draw. Pressing the tool's key again also switches it.
CapIso Shape2 to 43How wide the flat tip at the top and bottom corners is: 2 is a sharp point, 4 is flat. Also the size step when dragging.
BevelIso Shape0 to 1024 px0 px (square edges)Chamfers the box's four top edges with a 45° slope: the top shrinks and the sides stop short of it. The front slopes take the side colors, the back ones the top color. It never grows past the box's height or half its footprint. For boxes.
StyleIso ShapeFill + outline, Fill, OutlineFill + outlineFill and outline, fill only, or outline only; click to step through them.
Show back edgesIso ShapeOn or offOffAlso draws the edges hidden behind the shape, like a wireframe. With the Outline style.
Rotate 90°Iso ShapeA buttonSloping down to the rightTurns the shape a quarter turn, so it slopes the other way. For ramps, stairs and prisms.
Auto-shade from foregroundIso ShapeOn or offOnColors the top face with the foreground color and shades the sides darker, along the Shades when the color is on them. Off, five swatches set the outline, inner edge and face colors.
RateSpray1 to 648How many dots each burst adds.
Scatter XScatter0 px to 64 px8 pxHow far each stamp can land left or right of the path.
Scatter YScatter0 px to 64 px8 pxHow far each stamp can land above or below the path.
CountScatter1 to 162How many stamps land at each step along the path.
StrengthBlur1 px to 4 px1 pxHow far each pixel looks for neighbors to blend with.
StrengthJumble0% to 100%100%The chance that a pixel the brush touches changes. Needs a brush bigger than 1 pixel.
StrengthDodge/Burn1 to 10025How much each stroke lightens (or, with the right button, darkens) the pixels it touches, in perceptual lightness. 100 moves half way from black to white.
Hue shiftDodge/Burn0° to 60°0°Also turns the hue of each pixel it touches: lightening shifts toward warm yellow and softens the color, darkening (right button) shifts toward cool blue and deepens it, the way pixel artists shade. 0 keeps the hue.
PatternDitherBayer 2×2, Bayer 4×4, Bayer 8×8, Dots, Horizontal lines, Vertical lines, Diagonal lines, NoiseBayer 2×2The pattern the brush paints through: Bayer checkers (2×2 coarsest, 8×8 finest), halftone dots, lines, or an even noise scatter. It lines up with the sprite's top-left corner, so strokes that overlap stay on one pattern.
DensityDither0% to 100%50%How much of the pattern gets painted: 50% of Bayer 2×2 is a checkerboard, 100% paints every pixel.
TypeGradientLinear, RadialLinearA straight ramp along the drag, or rings around its start.
ColorsGradientFG → BG, StopsFG → BGRun from the foreground to the background color, or through the Stops.
StopsGradientUp to 32 colors, each at a position along the dragEmptyThe colors the gradient runs through, left = where you start dragging: click the bar to add the foreground color, drag a handle to move its stop (meeting a neighbour makes a hard edge) or off the bar to remove it, drop palette colors on the bar or a handle; Even spreads them out, FG recolors the selected stop. Shift+click a palette range to load it. With fewer than two, it runs foreground to background. With Colors set to Stops.
DitherGradientNone, Bayer 2×2, Bayer 4×4, Bayer 8×8, Dots, Horizontal lines, Vertical lines, Diagonal lines, NoiseBayer 4×4None blends smoothly; the others step between the colors in a pattern, for a pixel-art look: Bayer checkers (2×2 coarsest, 8×8 finest), halftone dots, lines, or an even noise scatter.
SnapGradientFree, PaletteFreeFree blends any colors; Palette paints only palette colors, each pixel the nearest one, and with Dither steps between neighbouring palette colors.
Rotation algorithmMoveFast Rotation, RotSprite, BilinearRotSpriteHow rotated and scaled pixels are resampled: Fast Rotation keeps them sharp, RotSprite rotates pixel art cleanly, Bilinear blends them smoothly.
PivotMoveA corner, an edge's middle, or the centerCenterWhere the point everything turns and scales around starts; you can also drag it on the canvas.

SampleEyedropperComposite, LayerCompositePicks the color you see from all visible layers, or from the active layer only.
TileTile StampAny tile in the layer's tileset1The tile being stamped (0 is the empty tile); pick it in the Tileset panel.
Flip HTile StampOn or offOffFlips the stamped tile horizontally.
Flip VTile StampOn or offOffFlips the stamped tile vertically.
Rot 90°Tile StampOn or offOffRotates the stamped tile 90° clockwise.
Place tilesPencil Eraser Line Rectangle Ellipse Triangle Hexagon Star Paint BucketOn or offOffPlaces the tile picked in the Tileset panel on the tilemap cells the tool covers (the Eraser empties them, the Bucket fills the connected cells holding the clicked tile) instead of painting pixels. Symmetry mirrors the tiles and a selection limits them. While a tilemap layer is active.
Fill modeMagic WandContiguous, GlobalContiguousSelects only the connected area you click, or every matching pixel on the layer.
ToleranceMagic Wand0 to 2550How different a color can be and still be selected (per color channel). Separate from the Paint Bucket's.
8-connectedMagic WandOn or offOffAlso spreads to diagonal neighbours, so the selection leaks through 1 px diagonal lines. Off, only up, down, left and right count as connected. With Contiguous.
Stop at gridMagic WandOn or offOffKeeps the selection inside the grid cell you click. While the grid is shown.

Stop at gridPaint Bucket GradientOn or offOffKeeps the area inside the grid cell you click. While the grid is shown.
Close gapPaint Bucket Gradient0 px to 5 px0 pxTreats gaps in an outline up to this many pixels wide as closed, so the fill stops there instead of leaking out (the gap itself is filled). 0 is off. With Contiguous.
PatternPaint BucketSolid, Checker, Dither 25%, Dither 75%, Horizontal stripes, Vertical stripes, Diagonal, Grid, Dots, BricksSolidFills with a repeating pattern of the foreground and background colors (swapped on right-click) instead of a solid color. Patterns line up from the canvas's top-left corner, so neighbouring fills match.
Paint across celsPencil Eraser Spray Scatter Dither Blur Jumble Dodge/Burn Paint Bucket Gradient Rectangle Ellipse Triangle Hexagon Star Line Curve Polygon Contour Iso ShapeOn or offOffPaints every cel selected in the timeline at once (the cel you paint on must be one of them): one stroke, fill or shape lands on each, and one undo takes it back. The badge counts the cels it reaches; locked and hidden layers are skipped. With the painting tools.
